RISING LEVELS OF VIOLENCE IN SCHOOLS

At the recent NEU Conference it was stated that there was a real concern about the rising levels of violence in schools. NEU research stated that 66% of state school teachers in England say that pupil behaviour has a negative impact on learning either regularly or all the time. The research suggested causes of behavioural challenges might be a lack of resources and staffing, the unmet needs with regard to SEN and the impact of social media.

Other factors include the fact that families are under pressure, the lack of food, lack of money and poor housing. Children are coming to school emotionally fraught , they are lacking the necessary sleep, they are hungry and anxious.

Parent Kind say 1 in 10 children feel unsafe in school, which means nationally 1 million children feel unsafe.

Teachers feel compassion for support needed for children with a range of needs. However, there is a need for the welfare of teachers and teaching assistants to be a primary concern. The NEU called for a better gathering of information to do with the incidents of violence against teachers and reaching assistants.
