Research led by academics at the University of Calgary examined screen use by 2.8 million children across 64 countries including social media, gaming and streaming.
They found heavier screen use was linked to poorer school performance, weaker language skills and more emotional and behavioural problems. They also found that these children had difficulties with friendships and relationships and peer problems.
Children who spent more time on screens had more symptoms of anxiety and depression.
